How long DeepL keeps your text on the free version
DeepL’s free version keeps your text for a limited time to train its models, including any corrections you make. Paid plans delete submitted text and translations once the job is done and do not use them to improve the service.
The free version also forbids personal data of any kind. Translating it requires a Pro plan and a data processing agreement. On the API, the no-training guarantee starts with the paid Growth plan. The free Developer plan does not include it.
DeepL API pricing for a video catalog
The DeepL API Growth plan costs $26.00 a month billed yearly, or €23.80 in France, with 12 million characters a year, then $27.50 or €22 per extra million. Usage is capped at 50 million characters a month. The free Developer plan gives a one-time credit of a million characters and no access to the web translator.
A tube with 10,000 videos whose title and description run to 250 characters sends 2.5 million characters per language, so four target languages fit in Growth’s yearly allowance. The same volume costs $37.50 per language on Amazon Translate, with no subscription.
The API sets tone on five levels, including “prefer less formal”, which suits a dating site. A context field, which is not billed, helps with short strings such as video titles. Up to ten custom instructions of 300 characters each can steer the output, but only into German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
DeepL web translator plans
The web translator and apps are billed per user. Dollar prices are those shown for the United States.
| Plan | Monthly price, billed yearly | Characters a month |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 50,000 |
| Individual | $8.74 | 300,000 |
| Team | $28.74 per user | 1,000,000 per user |
| Business | $57.49 per user | Unlimited, fair use |
Individual and Team come with a 30-day trial. The free plan allows one file a month up to 5 MB and a five-entry glossary per language pair.
Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and India
DeepL covers 114 languages plus 12 regional variants, including Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Canadian French and US or UK English. For an American cam or dating site expanding to Mexico or Brazil, those two variants are the ones that matter. Hindi and Bengali are on the list too.
Glossaries, which lock the translation of performer or series names, work on 44 of the 126 languages and variants. The professional terms limit use to the customer’s internal purposes, so reselling translation done with DeepL needs written approval.
