Lemmy

join-lemmy.org

The only one here whose site does not open empty: your server is wired into hundreds of others, and your members read and reply there without an account. Against that, two developers on donations, at thirty-eight per cent of their target.

Open sourceFreeForum network

Flarum

flarum.org

The freest licence of the five, a forum that looks current, and a repository that moves almost daily. The price is not in money: PHP 8.3 and command-line access are required, which rules out cheap shared hosting.

Open sourceFreePHP

MyBB

mybb.com

The oldest of the five, and the one that asks least of your server: PHP 5.2 is enough, and four databases will do. Against that, a volunteer project the technical crowd has largely left for others.

Discourse

discourse.org

The most active project in this category by a wide margin. Two things to know before starting: it needs a whole server with Docker, and it is self-hosting that fits here, not their own hosted service.

Open sourceFree

XenForo

xenforo.com

The only paid product here, and the only one with support included for twelve months. Its contract restricts no type of content, but it limits use to a single URL declared in advance, and installations report back to the vendor.

What you need to administer

Discourse requires a server with Docker and cannot run on ordinary shared hosting. Flarum needs command-line access to manage extensions. Compare these requirements with the access your host provides and the skills needed to maintain the site.

Discussion format and moderation

Lemmy organises submissions through votes and nested comments, connecting your server to other communities. Some of what members see therefore comes from instances you do not moderate. MyBB and XenForo follow the traditional topic-based forum model. Each format brings different moderation work.

The licence and the hosted service

Discourse’s open-source software and its publisher’s hosting have separate conditions, with the latter prohibiting obscene content. XenForo requires a declared URL and charges separately to extend access to updates. Compare the right to keep using an installed version with the cost of continued maintenance.
