The only one here whose site does not open empty: your server is wired into hundreds of others, and your members read and reply there without an account. Against that, two developers on donations, at thirty-eight per cent of their target.
The freest licence of the five, a forum that looks current, and a repository that moves almost daily. The price is not in money: PHP 8.3 and command-line access are required, which rules out cheap shared hosting.

Lemmy organises submissions through votes and nested comments, connecting your server to other communities. Some of what members see therefore comes from instances you do not moderate. MyBB and XenForo follow the traditional topic-based forum model. Each format brings different moderation work.
Discourse’s open-source software and its publisher’s hosting have separate conditions, with the latter prohibiting obscene content. XenForo requires a declared URL and charges separately to extend access to updates. Compare the right to keep using an installed version with the cost of continued maintenance.
