Adult Domains for Sale · Editorial review

Sedo review: free listings, 10 to 20% fees, adult category

sedo.com

Sedo is a Cologne-based domain marketplace where owners list names for free and pay a 10, 15 or 20% commission when they sell. Adult domains must sit in an adult category, which search results include by default.

Our verdict on Sedo

Sedo suits an adult webmaster with a portfolio to sell and nothing to pay upfront, since the commission already covers a secure transfer. Adult extensions such as .porn, .xxx, .sex and .adult carry no minimum fee.

The trade-offs: there are no payment plans, and a sale through the partner registrar network costs the top commission rate.

How Sedo files adult domains

Sedo's policy says domains with adult or pornographic terms must be placed in an adult category, and non-adult domains in non-adult categories. Sellers must tell Sedo straight away about any domain they think carries the wrong adult status. The search page ticks "Include adult domains" by default, and "porn" returns over 2,000 results.

Category I extensions, which include .com, .porn, .xxx, .sex, .adult and .cam, have no minimum fee. Category II, mostly country codes, carries a $200 minimum fee. Fees exclude VAT.

Sedo auctions and showcases

A Make Offer listing can go to auction for free once the first offer arrives, with that offer as the reserve. A direct auction can start any time for $59 and shows on the homepage and in search results. A homepage showcase costs $39 for 30 days, a category showcase $9.

What buying through Sedo costs

Buyers paying over $500 by card, PayPal or Alipay pay a 3% express processing fee. A buyer who wants Sedo to negotiate anonymously pays $99 upfront, non-refundable, plus 20% of the price on success. Sellers can hand a name of up to two words, with 12 months of traffic stats, to Sedo's brokers on an exclusive agreement for 15% on success. Keeping a sale and its price private costs another 2.5%.

Is Sedo legit?

Sedo is an established domain marketplace run by Sedo GmbH, part of the German group United Internet since 2001, with staff in Cologne and Boston. It reports 700,000 domain sales since launch, and its US business has been BBB accredited since March 2005. Marketplace purchases include Sedo's transfer service, which guides both sides through payment and the domain handover. Buyer and seller reviews are mixed, with an average of 3.7 out of 5 from 943 reviews on Trustpilot.

Strengths and limitations of Sedo

Strengths

  • Free listings.
  • No minimum fee on .porn, .xxx and .sex.
  • Secure transfer included.

Limitations

  • The top rate through SedoMLS.
  • No payment plans listed.
  • General terms that ban obscene names and content showing nudity, with no word on how that fits the adult category.

Sedo vs HugeDomains

HugeDomains sells its own .com stock at fixed prices with 0% payment plans, but does not buy domains. Sedo lets you sell as well as buy, across adult extensions.
