On a $20,000 site sale, the standard fee comes to $480. The Concierge service, which handles the transfer, costs double. Buyer and seller decide who pays: one of them, or half each. Paying by card or PayPal adds 3.05% and is only allowed on smaller amounts. Sellers are paid by wire, $10 domestic and $20 international, or by ACH, free for US banks.
How a website sale runs through escrow
- Buyer and seller agree terms and open the transaction.
- The buyer pays Escrow.com, which holds the funds in a trust account.
- The seller transfers the site and its access.
- The buyer confirms possession, which starts the inspection period.
- Escrow.com releases the funds once inspection ends or the transfer is verified.
Can Escrow.com be trusted?
Escrow.com is a licensed escrow company that has operated since 1999. Fidelity National Financial founded it, and the Freelancer group, listed in Australia, has owned it since 2015. The service is run by Internet Escrow Services in San Francisco under California DFPI license 9631867, with NMLS ID 1370002.
Complaints on Reddit describe funds held while Escrow.com rejects documents. Every user goes through Know Your Customer verification: a color scan of a government photo ID plus a proof of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement under three months old. Documents in another language must be translated into English and notarized, which slows down a seller in Brazil or India. Upload them before the buyer pays.
The common scam uses a fake escrow site. A buyer insists on an unknown service or a lookalike domain, the fake site reports the money as received, and the seller hands over the domain for nothing. A real escrow company takes a bank transfer into its own account, never into a person’s. Open the transaction yourself by typing escrow.com.
