Bing Webmaster Tools review: worth it for an adult site?

bing.com

Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft’s free console for sites that want traffic from Bing and citations in Copilot. A site already verified in Google Search Console imports in a few clicks, and the console adds keyword volumes and a backlink comparison with two competitors. Search data only goes back six months.

Our verdict on Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools is worth the ten minutes it takes to import an adult site from Google Search Console, mainly for two free reports Google does not offer: Bing keyword volumes by country and a side-by-side backlink comparison with two competitors.

It matters less for a site that lives on ad networks, social traffic or tube referrals. And it cannot recover lost time: data starts on the day the site is added, so the earlier the better.

Adding an adult site in a few minutes

The fastest route is the Google Search Console import: Bing pulls in the verified properties with their sitemaps and user roles, and treats them as verified straight away. You can import 100 sites per run, up to 1,000 sites per account. Bing keeps checking ownership through the linked Google account and picks up new sitemaps from it, and the link can be cut from the profile page.

Without Google, there are three ways to prove ownership: a DNS record, a BingSiteAuth.xml file at the site root, or a meta tag on the home page. DNS is the simplest choice behind an age gate, because nothing depends on what the verifier sees when it loads the page. Sign-in works with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account.

Reports usually appear about 48 hours later. Search Performance then shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position for up to six months, split between web, news, images, video and the knowledge panel. Bing counts every page from your site in a single result as a separate impression, so its totals will not line up with Google’s.

Keyword volumes and competitor backlinks at no cost

Keyword Research returns Bing search volumes for a seed term and its variants over any window in the last six months, filtered by country, language and device. A cam site weighing a Hindi or Portuguese landing page can compare demand in India or Brazil against the United States before writing a line. The tool also lists related terms, the questions people ask and the ten URLs ranking for the seed term.

The Backlinks report puts your link profile next to two other sites of your choice. One filter keeps only the domains that link to them and never to you, which is a ready-made outreach list. The links shown are a representative sample of each profile, with detail on up to 1,500 referring domains and a CSV export.

Site Scan adds an on-demand technical audit within a monthly page quota that Bing sets and will not raise. Up to five scans are stored at once.

How SafeSearch treats adult results in Bing

Bing leaves filtering to each user’s SafeSearch setting, which defaults to Moderate in most countries. Moderate hides explicit images and video but leaves explicit text visible. Strict removes adult pages from results altogether, and Microsoft notes that defaults can differ where local law or custom requires it. A tube’s thumbnails stay hidden for anyone on the default setting, while a text-heavy review blog or dating guide can still rank and show.

Age gates, cloaking and Site Scan

Bing has no published guidance on age verification screens. Its webmaster guidelines do list cloaking among the practices that cost visibility, meaning a materially different experience for crawlers than for visitors. An overlay gate on top of HTML that already holds the page content serves the same document to both, which keeps you on the safe side.

Two details matter here. Site Scan identifies itself as Bingbot but currently crawls from non-Bingbot IP addresses, so a gate that waves Bingbot through by IP will block the audit. And the NOARCHIVE directive keeps a page out of Copilot answers, which some publishers will want for explicit pages.

IndexNow versus Bing’s own URL submission

IndexNow notifies Bing when a URL is added, updated or deleted, and the ping is shared with the other engines in the protocol: Amazon, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep. Google is not on that list. A single request can carry up to 10,000 URLs once a key file sits at the site root, and many CMS and CDN platforms already support it.

Bing’s own submission tool and API still work, with a quota of 10,000 URLs per domain per day that resets at midnight UTC. Microsoft recommends IndexNow first and says the older submission routes may be deprecated. Resubmitting the same URL does not speed anything up, and Bing can still decline to index a submitted page.

Tracking Copilot citations with AI Performance

AI Performance counts how often your pages are cited as sources in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and some partner integrations. It lists cited pages and grounding queries, the short phrases the AI used to retrieve your content. Four preview features build on it: intent labels for queries, topic clusters, your citation share on a query and a period-over-period comparison.

The data is sampled, rare citations may not show, and totals can differ between views. A citation is not a click or a visit. Exports come in CSV or Excel.

Strengths and limitations of Bing Webmaster Tools

Strengths

  • Free, with a one-click import from Google Search Console.
  • Bing keyword volumes by country, language and device.
  • Backlink comparison with two competitors.
  • IndexNow, which also reaches engines other than Bing.
  • Copilot citation data page by page.

Limitations

  • Six months of history, nothing before the site was added.
  • Explicit images and video hidden under the default SafeSearch.
  • No age gate guidance from Bing.
  • Site Scan blocked by gates that trust Bingbot IP addresses.
  • Sampled backlink and citation data.

Bing Webmaster Tools vs Google Search Console

Each console only reports on its own engine, so most adult sites run both. Google Search Console comes first, with URL Inspection to check what Googlebot receives behind an age gate and a longer data history. Bing Webmaster Tools then adds keyword volumes, the backlink comparison and Copilot tracking. For a deeper crawl than Site Scan, Screaming Frog SEO Spider runs on your own machine.
