VideoWhisper review: a GPL webcam plugin for WordPress

videowhisper.com

VideoWhisper publishes PPV Live Webcams, a free GPL WordPress plugin that turns a site into a pay-per-minute webcam service. Video runs through a streaming server rented separately, $30 to $500 a month from the developer.

Our verdict on VideoWhisper

VideoWhisper suits a webmaster who can run a server and wants a WordPress cam site with full access to the code. The plugin is free, open and has no license lock, and streaming can come from any provider.

The PPV Live Webcams plugin

The plugin is on WordPress.org under GPL v2 or later, free and with no license lock. It handles performer and client sign-up, rooms, paid or free private calls and group shows billed per minute, tips with goals, creator subscriptions and Lovense. It does not carry the video itself. Version 7.5.11 is tested up to WordPress 7.0.6 and has 20+ active installs, while the developer’s broader live streaming plugin, version 7.3.2, has 400+.

VideoWhisper streaming prices

RangePer monthIncludes
DevelopersFree5 streams, 10 connections, 360p
Streaming only$30 to $300WebRTC with STUN and TURN, RTMP and HLS
Complete hosting$50 to $500Streaming, web hosting, archiving, VOD

Streaming is sold on a separate domain, WebRTC Host. The free tier is enough to build and test a site before paying. Some features, such as server-side archiving and RTSP restreaming, need a complete plan.

The provider behind VideoWhisper

The provider is Nica Teodor-Marian Persoana Fizica Autorizata, a Romanian sole trader registered under number 29856690 in Voluntari, with a full address published. Orders can go through BlueSnap, which then acts as merchant of record and handles invoicing and VAT.

Strengths and limits of VideoWhisper

Strengths

  • A free plugin under GPL.
  • Streaming from any provider.
  • A free tier for testing.
  • A named provider with an address.

Limitations

  • Adult content banned on the developer’s domains, live demos included, and service can end for any client its providers refuse.
  • Streaming billed every month.
  • Few active installs.
  • A server you must know how to tune.

VideoWhisper vs FluffCams

FluffCams sells an adult cam script for $499 with WebRTC streaming and compliance tools built in. VideoWhisper gives the plugin away but rents streaming monthly. For a ready-made adult site, pick FluffCams. For a WordPress site where you control all the code, pick VideoWhisper.
