UnderHost review: UnderMail with unlimited mailboxes

underhost.com

UnderMail, UnderHost’s email service, gives you unlimited mailboxes on your own domain from $4.95 a month, with 600 sent messages an hour and mail backups included. An SMTP relay is sold separately for newsletters. No server country is published for the email product.

Our verdict on UnderMail

UnderMail suits an adult site that wants an address for every model, department or partner without paying per mailbox, and that plans to email its members. Mailboxes are uncapped, mail is backed up, and a metered relay handles newsletters and transactional mail.

Check two things first. UnderHost does not say which country hosts its email, so ask support before paying. And the email product carries no money-back guarantee.

Sending newsletters through the UnderMail relay

Each domain can send 600 messages an hour from its mailboxes. Anything bigger goes through the UnderMail SMTP relay, which UnderHost markets for transactional notices, contact forms, campaigns and newsletters. The relay costs $4.95 a month plus $0.30 per 1,000 emails, so 10,000 messages come to $7.95 and 100,000 to $34.95. Every message is scored and filtered before delivery, and IP addresses are watched for blacklisting.

The Acceptable Use Policy requires permission-based lists, a working unsubscribe, bounce handling, suppression lists, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Purchased, scraped or rented lists are out. After complaints, spamtrap hits or mass bounces, UnderHost may cap sending, clear the queue or suspend mail.

UnderMail plans and prices

UnderMail Mini gives 5 GB for $4.95 a month, UnderMail Business 10 GB for $9.95. Both include one primary domain, unlimited aliases and mailboxes, SpamExperts filtering, Roundcube and Horde webmail, IMAP and POP3, autoresponders, forwarding, filters and a catch-all account. The platform is SmarterMail, with a web drive and OnlyOffice inside the webmail. Storage is shared between mail and files, so 5 GB is not 5 GB of messages.

What UnderMail guarantees

Email backup and recovery come with both plans. The Terms call any UnderHost backup a convenience that may fail or be deleted after suspension, with no guaranteed restore. Keep your own copy through an IMAP client.

The 99.9% monthly uptime SLA lists shared, reseller, VPS and dedicated services. Email hosting is not on the list, and email deliverability is excluded everywhere.

Billing and refunds on UnderMail

UnderMail is billed monthly in US dollars, by card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, wire or bitcoin. The money-back guarantee covers first-time shared or reseller hosting only, so email is not refundable. A late invoice can draw a fee of up to 25% after 72 hours, and every chargeback or payment dispute costs at least $150. Cancel from CustomerPanel before the renewal date.

Strengths and limits of UnderHost

Strengths

  • Unlimited mailboxes, no per-seat pricing.
  • A metered SMTP relay for newsletters.
  • Mail backups included.
  • Bitcoin accepted.

Limitations

  • No server country published for email.
  • No refunds on email.
  • Email left out of the uptime SLA.
  • A $150 minimum fee per chargeback.

UnderMail vs OceanicHost

OceanicHost rents 5 mailboxes and 5 GB for EUR 2.99 a month with no ID required, and names the four countries of its data centers. It also forces mail through its own relay, bans newsletters and keeps no backups. UnderMail costs a little more but uncaps mailboxes, backs up mail and sells a relay for campaigns. To email your members, pick UnderMail. For a contact address in a known country, OceanicHost fits better.
