AgeChecked review: age checks inside the paysite checkout

agechecked.com

AgeChecked is a London age verification company, incorporated in 2016, that checks paysite members in the background while they pay. Its only public price covers the WooCommerce plugin, £40 a month for 100 checks, and the people who reviewed it on Trustpilot give it 2.1 out of 5.

Our verdict on AgeChecked

AgeChecked fits a subscription site whose members pay by card and which wants age assurance without an extra sign-up step. Most members are cleared by their payment, and only the rest see a selfie or ID request. A free tube with no checkout gains little from that design.

Ask for a live demo and pass rates before signing. End-user reviews describe failed checks more often than smooth ones, and the e-commerce plugins get little upkeep.

Which adult sites AgeChecked is pitched at

AgeChecked sells to adult sites facing the US state laws, naming Louisiana, Utah and Texas, and to UK businesses. Its pitch to the adult industry is a free consultation, booked in any time zone, on questions such as how age checks affect rebills on existing members or how to cover a large network of sites with the least friction. The team then works with the site’s payment processor and developers during onboarding.

AgeChecked does not cite Ofcom’s highly effective age assurance guidance on its adult pages. A UK site needs the provider to confirm in writing which of its methods it presents to Ofcom as compliant.

How AgeChecked checks age at checkout

Most credit and debit card issuers only give cards to adults, so AgeChecked runs its check in the background while the member pays and lets those payments clear age without another step. Fewer steps at sign-up mean fewer abandoned joins, which is the whole case for paysites.

Prepaid and gift cards prove nothing. Members who pay that way get a secondary check:

  1. facial age estimation from a selfie,
  2. a passport or driver’s license upload if the estimate is not enough.

The same engine connects three ways. The client API runs while the customer types their details, a hosted pop-up can open at any point of the journey and returns in seconds, and a CSV batch upload through the client portal checks an existing member list in one go. That batch route suits a site that must bring its current subscribers into line before a state law takes effect.

What end users say: 2.1 out of 5 on Trustpilot

A visitor sent to AgeChecked can verify a bank card, with no charge taken, or upload an ID document, which takes about two minutes. It is free for them. Once verified, they pass straight through other AgeChecked sites on their own device and log in with their AgeChecked account on a shared one. The site receives only an over-18 answer, without the date of birth.

On Trustpilot, AgeChecked scores 2.1 out of 5 from 34 reviews, 91% of them one star. The reviewers are people being verified: a UK driving licence rejected however it was typed, a password reset that never worked, a 78-year-old who failed the head-turn and smile selfie. The newest review, from September 2026, is a five-star note that a driving licence worked first time. AgeChecked does not invite reviews there and has not replied to any.

Thirty-four reviews is a small sample next to the millions of users AgeChecked claims. For a paysite, though, every failed check is a lost join, so ask for pass rates on ID and facial estimation during the demo.

How much does AgeChecked cost?

AgeChecked publishes one price: its WooCommerce plugin starts at £40 a month for 100 checks, or £0.40 per check, sold as monthly credit packs. The plugin itself is free, but it needs an AgeChecked merchant account to activate. The API, pop-up and batch channels are quoted on request.

When asking for a quote, give your monthly joins, the share paid by card, and the number of sites. Members already verified on another AgeChecked site skip the check, which lowers the count on a network.

AgeChecked for WooCommerce, Shopify and PrestaShop

The WooCommerce plugin has been on WordPress.org since 2017, was last updated in May 2021 and has fewer than ten active installs.

The Shopify app, launched in August 2025, runs after purchase on the thank-you page. Verified orders are released, failed or skipped ones are held and tagged for staff. It holds 1.0 out of 5 from two UK merchants: one could not install it in June 2026, the other reported 403 errors from AgeChecked’s servers and no reply from support in July 2026.

A third-party PrestaShop module from PrestaHeroes appeared in August 2026 and also needs an AgeChecked merchant account.

These plugins are built for shops selling alcohol, vapes and knives. An adult toy store can use them, while a paysite connects through the API and its payment processor.

Is AgeChecked legit?

Yes, AgeChecked Ltd is an active UK company, number 10016216, incorporated in February 2016 with its registered office at 124 City Road, London, and run by Alastair Graham. It says it has handled age verification for clients since 2014. It claims GDPR and BSI PAS 1296 compliance and lists membership of FSM, the German youth protection body. The Age Check Certification Scheme registry has a page in its name, with no certificate or standard shown. Its blog has not been updated since May 2025.

AgeChecked says personal data is wiped as soon as age is proven and the ID scan is never stored.

AgeChecked strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Checkout-based checks that most card-paying members never notice.
  • CSV batch upload to verify an existing member base.
  • Proof reused across client sites, free for the visitor.
  • Only an 18+ answer reaches the site.

Limitations

  • One public price, for WooCommerce, everything else quoted.
  • Poor end-user reviews, 2.1 out of 5 on Trustpilot, mostly failed checks.
  • Neglected plugins: WooCommerce untouched since 2021, Shopify rated 1.0.
  • Little gain without a checkout, for a free tube.

AgeChecked alternatives: VerifyMy and OneID

VerifyMy mainly checks age from an email address and lists £1 down to £0.80 per successful check, with a twelve-month term. That asks less of a visitor on a free site than a card or an ID.

OneID confirms age through online banking or a mobile operator, but the banking route needs a UK bank account. For members paying by card from the US or elsewhere, AgeChecked’s checkout check does not depend on a UK bank, though its country coverage is not published.
