How to start a porn site in 2026

Starting a porn site takes six things: a site model, content you hold the rights to, a domain name, a host that accepts adult, an age verification system and a way to get paid. The technical kit costs under $200 for the first year. The rest of the budget goes into compliance, payments and content.

Infographic: the ten decisions to make before opening a first adult site.

What do you need to start a porn site?

Starting a porn site takes the same technical work as any other site, plus three questions to settle before you open: verifying the age of your visitors, hosting with a provider that accepts this content, and picking a revenue route that is open to adult, ad network, affiliate programme or visitor payments.

The entry cost stays modest. A .com runs ten to fifteen dollars a year, shared adult hosting starts around $6 a month, a video catalogue script costs about $99 in its base version, and a set of adult WordPress themes and plugins is €79 as a one-off payment.

The rest takes preparation. Age verification is required wherever your visitors are, and the systems that respect privacy run through an outside provider. Taking card payments yourself means a specialised provider, because Stripe forbids adult content and PayPal puts it under pre-approval.

Keep your expectations realistic on timing. The domain, the hosting and the install take a few hours. Enough content to make a visit worth it takes weeks. Search traffic takes months before it brings its first regular clicks.

1. What kind of porn site should you build?

The type of site decides everything else: the content you have to produce, the way you make money, and the rules you have to follow. Five models come up, and none of them asks for the same work or the same budget.

Pick a niche inside whichever model you choose. A general site competes with tubes that have twenty years of catalogue behind them, while a niche with its own audience can be covered properly by one person. The niche decides your keywords, your content sources and the affiliate offers that will pay you.

The affiliate site runs on articles, comparisons and picks that send visitors to partner sites. You earn a commission on the conversions you generate. You host no video and handle no payment, and age verification only concerns you if your own pages show explicit content. It is the cheapest model to launch and one of the slowest to pay off, because it lives on search. Competition is fierce.

A tube is a free video catalogue funded by advertising, where the visitor watches without paying and without an account. It needs a dedicated script, enough bandwidth, a steady supply of content and a plan for pirated uploads, because takedown requests will come. The revenue comes from ad networks. At JuicyAds, the floor price for the United States is $0.02 CPM on banners, $0.01 on native and $0.50 on popunder. Those are the minimums an advertiser pays, your share lands below once the network takes its cut.

A paysite, or subscription site, is a site where access to the catalogue is paid for, by the month or per item. It earns the most per visitor and takes the most preparation. You need exploitation rights, or your own shoots, plus a customer area, support and a payment solution that said yes. Without that solution, the site cannot open.

The white label cam site lets you offer an existing platform's service under your own brand. The platform produces the content and handles the payments, then pays you a share. You can also build your own cam network, and the field is crowded. Our directory lists cam site scripts.

The directory or classified ads site sells visibility to advertisers, escorts or studios for instance. Its pages often carry no explicit content. It does carry a legal risk of its own, tied to what third parties publish, and it needs real moderation. Our directory lists directory scripts and escort site scripts.

2. What the law requires before you open

The law that applies to your site is the law where your visitors are, whatever the country of your server or your company. Three blocks of rules decide what you have to build before opening: verifying the age of visitors, proving the age and consent of the people in your content, and handling your visitors' data.

Age verification in the United States

On 27 June 2025 the Supreme Court upheld the Texas law HB 1181 in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton. The law requires commercial sites publishing sexual material harmful to minors to verify that visitors are 18 or older. The Court noted that at least 21 other states had passed materially similar requirements.

The practical consequence for a new site is geographic. Either you verify everywhere, or you verify state by state, or you close access to some states. Several large platforms chose the last option rather than deploy a check.

Diagram: the visitor proves their age to a third party, which tells the site they are an adult without revealing who they are.
Double anonymity splits the check in two: the verifier does not know which site you are visiting, the site does not know who you are.

Whatever the method, a page where the visitor clicks « I am over 18 » verifies nothing and satisfies no state law. The systems that pass split the check in two: an outside provider confirms the age, your site receives a yes or a no.

The United Kingdom and the European Union

In the United Kingdom, section 81 of the Online Safety Act 2023 requires services that publish pornography to use age verification or age estimation that is « highly effective at correctly determining whether or not a particular user is a child ». The duty has applied since 25 July 2025, and the provider must also keep a written record of the methods used.

The European Union runs on national rules that point the same way, with regulators that can order blocking. If your traffic comes from these countries, treat the check as a design decision rather than an afterthought.

AgeVerif offers a free integration to check the age of your visitors.

Proving the age and consent of the people in your content

In the United States, 18 U.S.C. 2257 requires producers of sexually explicit depictions of real people to create and keep individually identifiable records for every performer, after examining an identification document.

If you do not shoot the scenes yourself, your position depends on your exact role in producing and distributing the content. You still have to show where your content comes from and that you hold the rights to it. A studio or a professional supplier hands you the compliance documents, which is far safer than picking up files with no contract and no paperwork.

For content generated or altered by AI, be careful on the result. Any content that could show a real person without their agreement, or anyone who could pass for a minor, has no place on any site.

Personal data

Age verification creates sensitive personal data, because it reveals that someone visits a pornographic service. Keep the collection to the strict minimum, and never store identity documents in your own database. A leak there is the kind you do not recover from.

Your site also needs the usual paperwork: a privacy policy, a consent banner for advertising trackers where it applies, terms of use, a reporting procedure and an address for copyright takedown requests.

This article does not replace a lawyer.

3. Where to find content for your site

Content is the only reason a visitor stays, and it is the job that takes the most time. Four sources exist, and most sites combine two of them.

Shooting it yourself

You own everything, you set the pace, and nobody can ask you to take a scene down. It is also the option that asks for the most work up front: time, gear, and the written agreement of every person on camera along with a copy of their ID. Keep that file from the first scene, networks and platforms ask for it before they accept a site.

Buying a licence

Studios and content banks sell videos and photos with the right to publish them. You pay per scene, per batch or by subscription, and the files come with the documents proving the performers were adults and consenting. Two things to check before paying: what the licence actually allows, one site or several, and whether those documents are in the delivery. Our directory lists photo and video banks for webmasters and studios that sell to webmasters.

Content supplied by affiliate programmes

An affiliate programme gives you galleries, clips and banners ready to publish, as long as you keep your tracking link. It is the fastest way to fill a new site with no budget, and plenty of adult blogs run on nothing else. In exchange you publish the same material as dozens of other sites, which caps your search results quickly.

AI generated content

Image and video generators produce content nobody else has, for the price of a monthly subscription. Check the terms of the tool before you build on it: commercial rights and adult content vary a lot from one to the next. Midjourney lets subscribers own the images they create, with a Pro or Mega plan required above one million dollars of yearly revenue, and its rules state « No adult content or gore ». Adobe's generative AI guidelines forbid users to « create pornographic material or explicit nudity ». Both mainstream tools are closed to explicit content, so look at AI content generators that allow it.

Reposting another site's videos

Downloading videos from a tube and republishing them means publishing someone else's work. Takedown requests land with your host, which sometimes suspends the site while it waits for your answer, and ad networks close the accounts of sites that pile them up. When a site offers an embed code, use it: the video stays with its owner, you store nothing, and the copy question never comes up.

Whatever you buy, keep the invoice, the licence and the date for every batch. The day someone disputes a scene, you will have the paperwork at hand.

At a specialised host like Vicetemple, the first adult plan starts at $6 a month.

4. Domain name and hosting

This is the simplest part of the project, and it is settled in a few hours. Two decisions only: the name you publish under, and where the files live.

Choosing the domain name

A good name is short, easy to type after hearing it, with no hyphens or digits that get lost out loud. Check it is free on the social networks you plan to use, because changing name six months later costs every bit of search traffic you had earned.

A .com runs ten to fifteen dollars a year at most registrars, renewal at the same price, and WHOIS privacy is often included. At Porkbun, for example, it is $11.08 a year. A .xxx stays ten times more expensive, around $100 a year, sometimes with a discount on the first year. For a first site, the .com is enough. Our directory lists domain registrars that accept adult sites, including Porkbun.

At a registrar like Porkbun, the price swings tenfold depending on the extension you pick.

Turn on WHOIS privacy so your name and postal address stay out of the public domain records, and set up an email address on your own domain. Networks and affiliate programmes often refuse a free address at sign-up.

Finding a host that accepts adult

Plenty of mainstream hosts exclude pornographic content in their terms of use, and only notice the day your site works. Finding out after you paid costs you a migration. Before ordering, open the terms of service and search for « pornographic » and « adult ». If any doubt remains, write to support and keep the answer.

Specialised adult hosts say so up front and cost about the same as an ordinary plan. The first plan usually sits around $6 a month with fifteen gigabytes of storage, unlimited traffic, a dedicated IP and cPanel. A blog, an affiliate site or a gallery catalogue fits comfortably in that. Our directory lists hosts that accept adult content, including Vicetemple.

Video changes the scale

Hosting your own videos moves the problem to storage and bandwidth. A modest blog lives on a few gigabytes for years. A video catalogue counts in hundreds of gigabytes, then in terabytes. Three stages follow each other: shared hosting to begin with, a private server when the player starts stuttering, then a delivery service that moves the files closer to your visitors, what the industry calls a CDN.

As long as your catalogue stays small, embedding videos from a source site avoids that expense entirely.

Four things to check before paying

  • The terms of service name adult content and allow it.
  • Backups are included, dated, and you can restore one yourself.
  • The reaction to a takedown request is written down somewhere: the provider removes the page, or the whole account.
  • You can move up a plan without changing host.

5. What does a porn site cost in the first year?

A first adult site costs $150 to $200 in its first year if you do not store your own videos. The technical kit is cheap, and the lines that run the bill up are the content and the time you put in.

The price of the domain, the hosting and the software

A .com costs ten to fifteen dollars a year at most registrars, renewal at the same price, WHOIS privacy usually included. Shared hosting that accepts adult starts around $6 a month for fifteen gigabytes and climbs to $20 or $25 for 80 GB. A private server, needed as soon as you convert video, starts closer to $40 or $60 a month.

On the software side, a set of adult WordPress themes and plugins is a one-off payment, €40 to €200 depending on the range: at WP-Script, €79 for the starter pack and €189 for full access. A video catalogue script sits between $100 and $300 to own outright, with monthly rental available: at KVS, $99 for the base version, $299 with accounts and paid access, or $49 a month. A turnkey site runs around $500, theme, domain and a few months of server included. Our directory lists tube scripts, including KVS and WP-Script.

Age verification is rarely bought online. Providers work on quotes, Yoti for one prices after a first conversation. AgeVerif is the exception, its integration is free and it is certified IEEE 2089.1-2024 for online age verification.

The last row is a reminder of where the money will come from, because the starting setup depends on it. With affiliate and advertising you front nothing, the network and the partner programme pay you. With subscriptions you first need a payment provider, which takes a commission on every sale. If the account is opened in your own name, the card schemes also charge an annual high risk registration, $950 for Visa and $500 or $1,000 for Mastercard depending on the region.

Content, bandwidth and advertising

Content is the real variable. A studio licence is negotiated per scene or per batch, a shoot costs the gear and the people on set, and the material supplied by affiliate programmes costs nothing but the time to lay it out. That is the line that separates a $200 budget from a budget in the thousands.

Add bandwidth as soon as you host video, and a few tens of dollars a month if you buy traffic for your first visitors.

Can you start a porn site for free?

Part of the setup is free. WordPress is open source software, free themes exist, and affiliate programmes supply images and clips at no charge. Two items stay paid: the domain name and the hosting, because you need a provider that accepts adult content in writing. Count about $80 to run for a year with a domain and an entry level adult plan.

6. WordPress, tube script or turnkey site

Three ways to build the site exist, and the choice comes down to what you publish. Text and images sit very well in WordPress. A video catalogue needs software built for it. If you would rather not touch any of it, providers deliver the site assembled.

WordPress with an adult theme

WordPress runs a large share of the web, so you will find an answer to almost any question by searching. For an adult site, the useful addition is a set of themes and plugins built for explicit content, from €79 as a one-off payment at WP-Script for instance.

This route suits a blog, an affiliate site, a gallery catalogue and even a small video site built on embeds. You keep control of every page, and you handle the updates.

A tube script

A tube script is complete software for a video catalogue: automatic imports, file conversion, player, ad slots, user accounts and search. KVS costs $99 for the base version, $299 for the version that adds accounts and paid access, or $49 a month to rent.

Plan for a private server rather than shared hosting, because video conversion takes everything you give it. This route makes sense when video is the product, not when it illustrates articles.

The turnkey site

A provider installs the site, the theme and the server, and hands you the keys. Expect around $500 for a package with a theme, a domain name, a few months of virtual server and a content plan. You save time at the start, you inherit the provider's choices, and the rest is on you.

Which software for which site?

  • You mostly publish text, reviews and galleries: WordPress.
  • You publish a catalogue of video you host: a tube script.
  • You want to open fast without learning the install: a turnkey site.
  • You are testing an idea before investing: WordPress with embedded video, and change later.

One last marker on spending. A licence bought once costs less than renting from the third year on, and renting lets you walk away with nothing lost if the project stops after six months.

7. Taking payments

This step only concerns sites that charge their visitors: subscription, single purchase or unlockable content. If your revenue comes from advertising or affiliate programmes, skip to the next section, the money reaches you without you taking a payment at all.

Stripe and PayPal refuse adult content

Stripe lists adult content and services among its restricted businesses, alongside prostitution, escort services and pornographic video on demand. PayPal files adult content delivered digitally, video on demand and cam activities included, among the activities that need pre-approval. Nothing connects without its agreement first.

Opening an account on either while hiding what the site does ends the same way: funds frozen at the first report, and a balance that can stay blocked for months. Pick a provider that knows what you sell.

Providers that accept adult

Three names have been around for twenty years: CCBill, Verotel and Segpay. They process card payments for adult sites, run recurring subscriptions and take on the billing support. Their rates are negotiated case by case, by vertical and by volume. Ask at the first exchange for the commission per transaction, the fixed fees, the payout threshold and the payment delay.

Two setups exist and they do not cost the same. In the first, you sell under the provider's merchant account, which collects for you and pays you out. In the second, you open your own merchant account, with more control over the rates, and the card schemes then charge an annual high risk registration, $950 for Visa and $500 or $1,000 for Mastercard depending on the region. For a first site, the first setup is enough.

The file to prepare before applying

  • The site is live, with its pages and its content already in place.
  • Age verification works before any explicit content.
  • You can show where your content comes from and prove the performers were adults and consenting.
  • The terms of sale, the price, the length of the subscription and the cancellation procedure are clearly stated.
  • A support address on the site's own domain answers customers.

The descriptor on the bank statement

The name that shows on your customer's statement is set with the provider. A recognisable descriptor avoids disputes that cost you twice, the refunded amount and the chargeback fee. Plan a fast answer to refund requests as well: a customer who gets satisfaction in two days has fewer reasons to call their bank.

Cryptocurrency can sit alongside cards for the customers who ask for it, without replacing them. The vast majority of online payments still go through a card.

8. Making money from your porn site

Two ways to earn without taking a single payment from a customer: advertising and affiliate programmes. They stack on the same site and make up the starting model of most blogs and content sites.

Advertising

You set aside slots on your pages and an ad network fills them with its clients' ads. You are paid per thousand views, the CPM, or per click, the CPC. At JuicyAds, the floor price for the United States is $0.02 CPM on a banner, $0.01 on native and $0.50 on popunder. Those amounts are the minimum an advertiser pays, your share lands below once the network's commission comes off.

Three things move what you earn: the country your visitors come from, the format of the slots and where they sit on the page. A popunder usually pays more than a banner, and it costs you visitors who do not come back. On a new site, stick to a couple of well placed slots.

Affiliate programmes

In the adult industry, CrakRevenue is the best known affiliate platform. The principle is simple: you send visitors to a partner through a link that identifies you, and you earn a commission when they take the action the offer pays for. Three formats are common: a share of revenue for the lifetime of the customer, known as revshare, a fixed amount per sale, or a fixed amount per free sign-up.

Affiliate income needs less traffic than advertising to start paying, because one sale can be worth thousands of ad views. In exchange it needs pages that genuinely help the reader choose: an honest comparison, a clear presentation of the offers, and links placed where the question comes up.

Affiliate first, advertising later

On a site that is starting out, affiliate income can come before advertising: programmes accept small sites, and one page can produce a first sale in the first month. Ad networks go in later, once traffic is steady. Keep track of what earns, page by page, before adding another slot. Do not bury your pages under ads and affiliate links, visitors leave.

9. Finding your first visitors

A new site has no visitors, and nobody will stumble on it. Four sources exist, and they take neither the same work nor the same time.

Search

Google indexes adult sites and shows them for the queries that look for them, SafeSearch aside. It is the most profitable source in the long run and the slowest: count several months before the first regular clicks.

Aim at precise queries rather than generic words. « Review of such and such cam site » or « how such and such subscription works » can be won, « porn » is out of reach. Look for keywords with little competition. Register the site in Google Search Console from day one, it is free and it shows which queries display your pages and which ones bring clicks.

Tubes

Posting clips on the big tubes, with your site name in the video and in the description, brings immediate free traffic. Tubes often run a programme for webmasters, with slots reserved for those who feed their catalogue. Make sure you have the right to publish what you upload, the rule applies there as it does at home.

Buying traffic

This is the fastest way to find out whether your pages interest anyone. You buy views from an ad network and watch what visitors do. With a floor at $0.50 CPM on popunder in the United States, a thousand views cost fifty cents, which lets you test a page for a few dollars.

Set a low daily budget at first, target by country, and let it run long enough to get real numbers. Cut what does not convert rather than raising the budget.

Social networks

X allows adult content produced and distributed with the consent of the people involved, provided it is properly labelled and not prominently displayed. Profile photos and banners are excluded, and users under 18 cannot open marked media. Set your account so your images go behind a content warning.

Forums and specialised communities bring visitors too, as long as you take part for real. Join discussions and post a link now and then. An account that only ever drops links gets spotted fast.

The mix that holds in the first year

For a site starting on its own: pages written for precise queries, clips on tubes to bring people in right away, a small test budget in paid traffic, and a social account that posts regularly. Check every month where your visitors come from. Do not give up after a few months, this is a crowded field and traffic builds slowly.

10. The checklist before you open

Before you send the first visitor, go through the site in this order. Every line is checked by opening the page it refers to.

Content and rights

  • Every batch of content has its invoice, its licence and its date, filed in one place.
  • No video or photo comes from another site without written permission.
  • Pages describe what they show, without promising what is not there.

Access and compliance

  • Age verification triggers before any explicit content, tested from a private window.
  • The entry screen shows nothing pornographic until the age is verified.
  • The privacy policy, the terms of use and the contact address exist and open.
  • A takedown procedure is in place for copyright requests.

Technical

  • The site displays correctly on a phone, where most of the traffic will come from.
  • Videos start in under five seconds on a mobile connection.
  • The HTTPS certificate is active on every page.
  • A full backup exists, and you know how to restore it.
  • Every link in the menu and the footer leads somewhere.

Money and measurement

  • Ad slots or affiliate links are in place and tested from a visitor account.
  • If the site sells, a test purchase has been made end to end, up to the confirmation email and the statement descriptor.
  • Search Console has the site and the sitemap is submitted.
  • An analytics tool counts visits from day one.

The mistakes that cost the most

Four come back again and again with first sites: starting with a host that forbids adult in its terms, publishing content taken from elsewhere, leaving a plain « I am 18 » box as the age check, and building a subscription site before a payment provider has said yes.

That last one hurts most. A payment provider can turn your application down, and a subscription site with no way to collect does not open. Get the agreement before you build the customer area.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start an adult site?

The budget depends on the kind of site. Count around $170 for the first year of an affiliate blog, $250 to $380 for a gallery site, and $600 and up for a subscription site. The base is the same everywhere, ten to fifteen dollars a year for the domain name and a few dollars a month for hosting, the rest depends on the software and the content.

Can you start a porn site for free?

You can cut costs a long way, with free software and affiliate programmes that supply part of the material. A site the public can reach still needs a domain name and a host that accepts this content in writing. The real floor is around $80 for twelve months.

Do you have to verify the age of visitors?

Yes, wherever your visitors are. In the United States the Supreme Court upheld the Texas law HB 1181 on 27 June 2025, and at least 21 other states had passed similar rules by then. In the United Kingdom, highly effective age assurance has been required since 25 July 2025. A page where the visitor clicks « I am 18 » checks nothing.

Which host accepts an adult site?

A host whose terms allow this content in writing. Specialised providers start around $6 a month for fifteen gigabytes and climb to $20 or $25 for a comfortable plan. With a mainstream host, search the terms of service for the word « pornographic » before you sign up.

Is WordPress a good fit for an adult site?

Yes, for a blog, an affiliate site or a gallery catalogue, with a set of themes and plugins built for this content, from €79 as a one-off payment. For a video catalogue you host yourself, a dedicated script, around $99 for the base version, handles the storage, the conversion and the user accounts.

Can you take payments with Stripe or PayPal?

No for Stripe, which lists adult content and services among its restricted businesses. PayPal puts them under pre-approval, so nothing works without its agreement first. Adult sites go through specialised providers, whose rates are negotiated case by case and are not published.

Is it legal to make adult content?

It is legal in most of the United States, provided every performer is an adult who has consented and you keep the records 18 U.S.C. 2257 requires, after checking an ID document. Access is the other half: commercial sites publishing material harmful to minors have to verify the age of visitors in Texas and in at least 21 other states, and in the United Kingdom since 25 July 2025.

How long before the first visitors?

Several months through search, the time it takes for engines to find your pages and trust them. Paid traffic brings visitors the same day, from $0.50 per thousand popunder views in the United States, and clips posted on tubes do the same for free. Run the three together rather than waiting.
