MailWizz review: what happens when your license lapses

mailwizz.com

MailWizz is a self-hosted PHP email marketing application sold since 2013 by Onetwist Software, based in Romania. A regular license costs $59 a year or $79 once, and the extended license for running it as a paid SaaS costs $219 a year or $275 once.

Our verdict on MailWizz

MailWizz is a strong pick for adult senders who push volume through several relays and want autoresponders, A/B tests and IP warmup on their own server. The terms ban spam and purchased or rented lists.

Buy the lifetime license rather than the subscription, and try the public demo first: there are no refunds once you download.

Your app goes offline five days after a missed renewal

A MailWizz subscription runs for one year. If it is not renewed within five days of expiry, the application is taken offline until a valid license is entered. Your data stays untouched and you get a reminder a week before, but a declined card in the middle of a campaign would stop every send.

The lifetime license removes that risk. Its FAQ promises access to all future updates, while the license text itself does not guarantee maintenance or new versions, so keep a copy of the FAQ wording with your receipt.

MailWizz pricing

LicenseYearlyLifetime
Regular$59 (3 for $159, 5 for $239)$79
Extended$219 (3 for $589, 5 for $879)$275

Prices are in US dollars before tax, paid through Stripe. Each license includes one month of premium support, and you buy support packs after that. The regular license covers your own lists. The extended license is required as soon as customers pay to use your install, for example if you rent newsletter sending to cam models or creators.

Relays, warmup plans and bounce handling

You can add as many delivery servers as you need, your own SMTP servers or the big email providers, and use them together. Warmup plans spread sending over time to build a new server's reputation automatically, useful when a relay hands you a fresh IP. Bounces and complaints are processed from dedicated mailboxes with SMTP, or by webhooks with an email provider.

On the marketing side, MailWizz handles regular, autoresponder and recurring campaigns, A/B tests, segments, forms and drag-and-drop landing pages. Unlimited customer accounts with permission groups make it a base for a SaaS.

What changed in MailWizz 3.0

Version 3.0 supports PHP 8.2 through 8.5, adds an MCP server that the built-in AI assistant connects to, and drops POP3 for bounce and complaint mailboxes. Upgrading from 2.x is manual, following the knowledge base, and 2.x now gets fixes only. The list-based data model and the interface carry over unchanged: the developer has ruled out redesigning them, since that would mean rewriting the app.

Hosting needs Linux, Apache or Nginx, PHP 8.2 or later, MySQL or MariaDB with InnoDB, real Linux cron jobs and the gd, zip, mbstring and curl extensions. If you would rather not run the server, MailWizz partners with Deploia for managed hosting.

MailWizz strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Cheap lifetime license for one site.
  • Multiple relays with automatic warmup.
  • Autoresponders, recurring campaigns and A/B tests.
  • SaaS resale with the extended license.

Limitations

  • No refunds after download.
  • Subscriptions shut the app down five days after expiry.
  • Updates not guaranteed by the license text.
  • A server to run yourself.

MailWizz, Acelle Mail or Mautic?

Acelle Mail sells a regular license for $80 once and an extended one for $199. For a single site the two cost about the same. To resell sending as a SaaS, Acelle Mail is $76 cheaper up front. Mautic is free under GPLv3 and runs on the same PHP 8.2 and MySQL stack. It is a marketing automation platform, with no license to buy or renew.
