How much a GoDaddy Auctions domain really costs
The winning price is only part of the bill: GoDaddy adds a one-year renewal and the ICANN fee, and membership costs $4.99 a year. A .com renewal is $22.99, so a $5 closeout ends up near $28 and a $30 win near $53. Membership is required to bid on expired and traditional auctions, not to buy now or make an offer.
Adult domains on GoDaddy Auctions
A “porn” search returns 150 listings: 100 buy-now prices, 49 make-offer listings and one expired-domain auction. Buy-now prices start at $50 for pornatoz.com and $95 for pornghetto.com, but the median sits around $6,489, and porn.online asks $1,250,000. The single auction, porn.solutions, opened at a $1 minimum bid against a GoDaddy estimate of $1,846.
Extensions matter. .xxx is supported in GoDaddy Auctions, while .porn, .adult and .sex are listed as “Not Supported”. You can still register all four normally at GoDaddy, but an expired .porn will never come up for auction there.
Expired auctions, closeouts, offers and buy now
- Expired auction: most names that lapse at GoDaddy are listed 26 days after expiry, for a 10-day auction.
- Closeout: with no bids, the name drops in price over five days, from as little as $5.
- Traditional auction: names GoDaddy relists after the previous owner lost them.
- Offer and counteroffer: the seller has seven days to respond, and an accepted offer is binding.
- Buy now: a fixed price you can take without negotiating.
Minimum increments are $5 up to $499.99 and climb to $1,000 above $50,000. Proxy bids raise you automatically up to your cap, and late bids extend the auction, so sniping does not work.
From winning bid to owning the domain
You must pay within 48 hours of the auction ending, after which GoDaddy charges the card on file, and a failed charge loses you the domain. Accepted offers allow 30 days to pay, and buy-now and offer purchases are delivered within 5 to 20 days.
An expired-domain sale is not final until 45 days after expiry, because the previous owner can still renew, which cancels and refunds the auction. After that, the name is locked at GoDaddy for 60 days following the change of ownership. GoDaddy sells the name only, never the old site's content, and makes no promise about the quality or legality of what is listed.
Is GoDaddy Auctions a scam?
No: GoDaddy Auctions is run by GoDaddy.com, LLC, the registrar itself, and its rules explain most of the “scam” stories. A Reddit post from March 2024 about a buy-now name still undelivered after weeks is a common complaint, and GoDaddy allows 5 to 20 days for delivery. Expired names can also be reclaimed by their previous owner, which cancels the win and refunds it, and proxy bids are binding.
ID verification above $1,500
Unverified accounts are capped at two offers at a time or $1,500 in total. Going higher means uploading a photo ID, a selfie holding it and a recent proof of address. Buy-now and offer purchases under $1,500 do not need it.
APIs for regular buyers
Every Auctions member gets the expiry APIs: downloadable inventory files, exact-match search on one or many names, instant purchase of eligible closeouts and bulk bidding. For someone tracking hundreds of adult keywords, that replaces manual searches. GoDaddy's backorder service has been phased out.
